It is little funny to look at how did I get into Genetics.

During the completion of B.Sc, unlike others, I was just eligible to apply for M.Sc, (My OGPA was dominated by 'D' followed by 'C's) . There is no course in my OGPA with clean 'A' to apply for M.Sc, except Seed Technology. Although I know, I may not get M.Sc seat with my OGPA, I simply applied to escape from going to job. The M.Sc application (Seed Tech) was submitted on the last day assuming that Seed Tech, in general is "less competitive". Post lunch, someone prompted, one can also apply for 2 courses (as plan B). Friends suggested me to submit the second application and I decided, just for fun, let me apply the "most competitive" one. Everyone unambiguously said, Genetics is the most competitive and I decided to fill that subject (purely for fun) in the application, assuming I will anyway not get the seat.

Filled the application for genetics, took postal order and went to DR office (it was 4pm), while they clearly denied my application saying, I missed the counter file, hence my postal order is invalid. Post office was already closed by 3pm and I decided NOT to apply and came back to room without submission. Senthil (M), while hearing this, was enquiring, "where did you loose the counter file"? I said, "I forgot, may be in the post office and today is the last day and DR office will get closed by 5pm".

Senthil said, let's search and he took me to post office. We could not find the counter file. He further enquired the post office sweeper lady, she said, she had already placed the trash in a gunny bag and thrown behind the post office. Senthil further went and took the big gunny bag (trash), put upside down and searched the whole thing. But we could not find. I told Senthil, "forget it man, this application was just for fun and it is already 5pm". While returning from post office, Senthil suddenly said, "WAIT".. He found the counter file near a tree. My God, we ran to DR office and submitted the application, although it was little late, we convinced them to take the application.

Contrast to my expectations, I was not even selected in Seed Tech, but Genetics due to the fact that all the top rankers in Genetics had moved out to Biotechnology (newly started that year) and Genetics became empty. So whosoever applied Genetics got the seat including me (?!) irrespective of the OGPA. Though I started Genetics with the guilty feeling, later Genetics became my blood and life.
